Last Thursday, we completed chapter 2 and chapter 3 of Paul’s letter to the Romans. We continued our discussion on the unrighteousness of all people, then moved on to the beginnings of Paul’s arguments for the doctrine of justification by grace through faith. Paul discusses in these sections the unrighteousness of the Jews, the judgment of God, and the righteousness of (from) God.

Last Thursday, we began to study Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. We made it through Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 verses 1-16.
The main idea of these passages is that we are all by nature sinful and unable to meet the requirements of God’s just Law.

On Thursday we kicked off a new men’s Bible study at my church. The first introductory topic was why studying the Bible is important and beneficial for Christians. It also allowed me to show the men how the discussions would be structured. Rather than a lecture style, we will be using a more Socratic format. I prepared some verses, quotations, and questions for discussion and steered the conversation. This format was inspired by my friend Tom’s Bible studies at my previous congregation.
View full postI know I have not posted here much. Writing is hard, and sometimes it stops being fun. I have a new reason to post some things here: I am starting a men’s Bible study at my church! I plan on summarizing my notes each week into a little post here. When I can I’ll post about Navy stuff or engineering problems I have been working on.
I have been reading the Aubrey/Maturin series. Maybe I will post about that, too!
I have been reading “Mastering the Art of Command” by Trent Hone this week. Mr. Hone frequently discusses Admiral Chester Nimitz’s philosophy on distributed and unified command, along with the history of how the United States organized the command of military forces in the Pacific Ocean and surrounding areas throughout World War II. I wanted to consolidate some information about the organization and reorganization of Allied command and control in the Pacific during the war and briefly discuss its importance for modern naval officers.
View full postI became interested in making a blog because of Tom Scott‘s weekly newsletter, which is probably the piece of internet content I most closely follow every week. He often links to other people’s websites or blogs. I think it is cool to read a work written by somebody who is passionate enough about a topic to post about it casually in long-form. These blogs inspired me to create my own, to confront new ideas head-on.
